The Junior League of Montclair-Newark, Inc. Presents
Kids in the Kitchen: Food & Fitness Fun Fair!
An exciting event designed to bring local families
together to build healthier lifestyles
Montclair/Newark, NJ -- MONTH, DAY, 2010 – On Saturday, March 6th, The Junior League of Montclair-Newark, Inc. (JLMN) will host Kids in the Kitchen: Food & Fitness Fun Fair!, a one day health fair designed to combat childhood obesity. By partnering with community organizations including COPE Center in Montclair, the Salvation Army, United Way, Montclair Public Schools, Mountainside Hospital, Newark Emergency Services for Families, Family Service League, the Against All Odds Foundation and Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, the JLMN has developed a family-oriented event that encourages children and parents to come together to create healthier lifestyles.
The goal of the Kids in the Kitchen (KitK) initiative, which is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI) is to empower youngsters to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its related health issues. KitK began in 2006, and today Junior Leagues in more than 200 locations provide lessons and demonstrations related to preparation of healthy meals and snacks and they do this in partnership with the local community organizations, chefs and nutritionists.
The March 6th Kids in the Kitchen: Food & Fitness Fun Fair! will offer a variety of entertaining activities to educate and guide children ages 5 to 12 and their parents through a full day of healthy decisions. Special guest appearances and demonstrations will cover breakfast, lunch, snack time and dinner, helping families discover affordable alternatives to improve their nutritional intake and increase energy with diet and exercise.
The event’s program will include Montclair’s very own Angel Williams, who will give kid-friendly hip-hop dance instruction. Partners from Mountainside Hospital will lead a “gross out” demonstration to illustrate the fat, sugar and sodium found in many popular foods. Attendees will also enjoy yoga instruction, a grocery relay, a yogurt parfait station, plus many other fun activities designed to teach valuable lessons about nutrition and fitness.
“I think that it is especially exciting that our new member class is bringing this Kids in the Kitchen event to our area this year! 31% of children in New Jersey are overweight or obese. This is an alarming statistic. Our Kids in the Kitchen event is an opportunity to help children to learn about making well informed healthy choices when it comes to food and fitness as well as showing them that a healthy lifestyle can be a lot of fun. Just a few weeks ago, the state of New
Jersey officially designated March as Childhood Obesity Prevention Month. I am proud that the Junior League of Montclair-Newark is working to address this important issue.”
Kids in the Kitchen: Food & Fitness Fun Fair! will take place on Saturday, March 6, 2010, from 11am-3pm at the Salvation Army at 13 Trinity Place in Montclair. The event is FREE. Registration is required for attendees, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
