Community Impact

A multi-faceted project devoted to enhancing

the community though a variety of short-term,

hands-on volunteer opportunities.

JLMN at Habitat for Humanity

Community Impact (CI) reaches a large and varied audience through the organization and implementation of mini-projects and “done-in-a-day” events. In a League year, CI reaches out to approximately 1,100 children and 560 adults.  CI programs include:

  • Chop n’ Chats - On a Sunday afternoon League members prepare meals for those who need it within our community.  On Monday, League members serve hot meals to area residents in need and hand out to-go bags with an additional meal. This program takes place at the new Salvation Army building in Montclair.

  • Making Money Work for You - A six-part educational and fun Financial Literacy program for local pre-school children in conjunction with HOMECorp and Montclair Township.

  • Morning Story Time - Once a month, JLMN members read stories from the series Lil’ Gruesome.  Nightstand Creations from Verona has donated the series where the theme is “It’s Nice to be Nice.”  The books are read to 3, 4 and 5 year olds at both Family Day Nursery in Bloomfield and Neighborhood Childcare Center in Montclair.

  • Taste of Newark - This is an annual event held in November to raise funds for scholarships for children at Newark's Link Community School.  JLMN volunteers help with set-up, registration, and both the live and silent auctions.

  • Read Across America – In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday on the first Monday in March, JLMN volunteers visit local nursery schools at Headstart in Glen Ridge and Montclair, Family Day Nursery in Bloomfield, and Neighborhood Childcare Center in Montclair.  This event is League wide with members from all projects coming together on this day to not only read to, but also leave new books with each child to take home.

  • NJ Ask Tutoring - This is a six-week tutoring commitment with students from Montclair Public Schools.  In this meaningful, hands-on opportunity, JLMN members commit to at least 3 successive sessions with the students as they help to prepare them for the Statewide Testing.

  • Easter Festival – An annual event held with the Salvation Army that celebrates Easter with a fun and festive get-together for orphans with AIDS.  JLMN members manage, plan and staff the party.

In 2009-2010 there is an added CI component where every month there is a new event with a different community partner which occurs on a Saturday. New events in “CI Saturdays” include:

  • WIC Waiting Room at the United Way Building - JLMN members created a waiting and play area overflowing with toys and books for children whose parents will be visiting the newly opened Family Success Center at the United Way. They also painted the walls with a colorful and vibrant Dr. Seuss mural.

  • Human Needs Food Pantry - JLMN members will be working at this local food pantry to collect clothing and food donations from fellow members and friends within our community.

  • Community Food Bank, Hillside, NJ  - JLMN members will be helping out at this Food Bank in NJ that feeds into most of the food pantries in our state including our local service area such as the Human Needs Food Pantry.

  • The Salvation Army’s Cornerstone Shelter - JLMN members will set-up and prepare breakfast on a day when people who are temporarily residing there are allowed a day to “sleep-in”.  Morning activities and fun things will be planned to interact and entertain the children.
